January 7, 2010The Snow Angel Workout
January 1, 2010This has become a midnight tradition to ring in the New Year – THE SNOW ANGEL WORKOUT. We did it last New Year’s Eve when it was a blizzard (we were completely snowed in up here in Litchfield County, CT) and a mere 5degrees (I was sitting by the fire the whole night), so this year was “warm” by comparison. Click here or on the photo below for a quick video clip. Happy New Decade! 2010 is sure to be great!

Daily Dose of Vitamin “E” (Exercise)

The Dolphin Float (Body+Soul Magazine)From your knees, lean forward until you come to rest on your forearms with palms in prayer position. Staying on your forearms, lift legs up into plank position, curling toes under, so that your body forms a straight line (also called elbow plank). Exhale and, hinging slightly at the hips, lift hips about six inches to form a triangle. Inhale and return to elbow plank. Repeat 10 times.
* I remember this photo shoot – it was in Ojai CA. Miles and miles of orange orchards surrounded the shoot location and it was sunny and warm. Ah, a good day.
I’m Sooo Doing This Next Year!
February 19, 2009New Yorkers are crazy – on Feb.3rd they raced up the Empire State Building. Just for the heck of it…a sanctioned event. Crazy, but cool, right? This morning’s New York Times newspaper has a cute article about stair climbing as exercise, with a cute picture taken at the finish line – the top of the Empire State Building.
Force of Nature
February 7, 2009
My hat is off to Laird Hamilton – I got a lot out of his book FORCE OF NATURE, where he shares his wellness philosophy and secrets. It’s original. It’s honest. It’s gutsy.
One of the biggest perks to writing for the media is getting free fitness/wellness books from PR people, and I read ‘em all. Most of them are filled with recycled shallow stuff that make me wonder where our creativity has gone….This one (which someone gave to Steve for xmas, but lucky me!) discusses barefoot energy, how finding inspiration is a prerequisite to finding wellness, and diet suggestions like hemp milk and espresso. It also showcases a workout that is not gym/equipment based, but instead a kind-of-surfer workout, using the ocean and a paddle. The typical reader of this book is probably male – and a subscriber to Men’s Health magazine – but women can get a lot out of it as well as the info is universal – wellness is body+mind+spirit and tending to all three is necessary. Check it out if you get the chance….or if you are looking for a Valentine’s gift for your boyfriend, buy it for him, “wink, wink”
Saturday Morning Hike
July 26, 2008I explored a new place to hike this morning located in Woodbridge Connecticut and it was amazing. First of all, there was nobody there – we had the whole place to ourselves. Second, it’s far away from roads and traffic, so my dogs, Sophie & Roxy, could be off leash (no leash laws either). Third, clean water! Sophie could swim and not be stinky. I feel like a stumbled upon a well kept secret. Just when you think you know about all of the outdoor possibilities, another one pops up, keeping things interesting.
I met my friend, Jessica, and her dog, Frieda, early in the a.m. and we hiked and talked while the dogs romped in the wilderness. It’s great exercise, but I realized that physical fitness isn’t my main motivator for hiking – isn’t nature invigorating to the spirit? The fresh air feels so good and watching the dogs experience their version of nirvana fills me with joy. Wellness is a verb. We have to do it. But, on top of that, true wellness affects the spirit. That’s why, I think, fitness can not be torture. If it’s torture, it’s not good for your spirit, and thus, not good at all. Something to think about…
