Exercise Mat Management

May 20, 2009

matsLet Mother Nature take care of your yoga mat! You don’t need fancy spray or detergents. Here’s what I do (and I’ve done this for over 10 years and my yoga mats have never deteriorated):

First, I have three mats that I rotate. One is in use while the other two are hanging on my deck getting rained on OR hanging in the guest bathroom shower. Second, I use unscented castile soap (Dr.Bronner’s Magic Soap is a good brand) and warm water. Remember, your face is up close to your mat and you don’t need to breath in cleaning chemicals. I use castile soap as my own soap and as Sophie & Roxy’s (the dogs) soap. (No funky perfumes for us!) Third, sunshine, sunshine, sunshine! My mats “lay out” in the sun for an hour or so and be sure to sun both sides. Sunlight is anti-bacterial and as with bed linens, gives a fresh air smell that I love. Four, I don’t store my mats rolled up. Try to lay them flat or hang them from a ledge. Five, be possessive of your mat. Don’t let your husband, your kids, your friends “borrow” your mat. They’ll taint it with their energy and their energy may be good or bad but it’s not YOUR energy….your mat is “a room of one’s own”.

My First Media Appearance Since Baby

wtnhHere’s a fun news segment I shot this morning at WTNH’s “Connecticut Style” showcasing core training cardio. (Sonia and Desiree are Buff Girls – most news hosts dread fitness segments because they have to wear fitness clothes and can’t hide behind a desk, but these two actually enjoy them.)

Not Too Shabby

May 10, 2009

buffdollI ran the 5k yesterday and I completed the race in just over 30minutes, which means 10minute miles – I’ll take it! I had a good rhythm and listened to electronic music on my Ipod the whole time. Now, I’m off to  a 4pm yoga class. Feeling a bit like my active old self again! (The sunny weather really helps and the fact that I am no longer breast feeding really really helps too.)

Ignorance is Bliss Until You Aren’t Ignorant Anymore

May 5, 2009

I’m running in a 5k roadrace this Saturday and I’m not a runner, but I thought, “hey, it’s just a 5k.” So I’ve been running a couple times a week to get into the groove…it’s not my favorite, I’ve gotta admit. Sophie (the dog) has joined me on a couple jaunts – she sets a good pace. Anyway, I just drove my car around the exact path I’ve been running and to my surprise it’s a mere 2.3miles! Not a 5k, which is 3.1miles. I’m waaayyyy slower than I thought. Gotta step it up today, rain or shine!

Daily Dose of Vitamin “E” (Exercise)

dolphin_floatThe Dolphin Float (Body+Soul Magazine)From your knees, lean forward until you come to rest on your forearms with palms in prayer position. Staying on your forearms, lift legs up into plank position, curling toes under, so that your body forms a straight line (also called elbow plank). Exhale and, hinging slightly at the hips, lift hips about six inches to form a triangle. Inhale and return to elbow plank. Repeat 10 times.
* I remember this photo shoot – it was in Ojai CA. Miles and miles of orange orchards surrounded the shoot location and it was sunny and warm. Ah, a good day.
