The Way to Get to the Top is to Get Off Your Bottom:)

February 24, 2009

ltv_logoI just read an article about how TV watching is at an all-time high. Americans now watch more than 151 hours of TV a month. I think that statistic has a lot to do with unemployment being up and the weather being horrific this time of year….I say, “great, stay home where it’s safe and warm, but maybe try to get off the couch a bit.” Click here to read my latest Lifetime.com column that gives you at-home fitness inspiration.sheltonave_1pager_final

I’m Sooo Doing This Next Year!

February 19, 2009

New Yorkers are crazy – on Feb.3rd they raced up the Empire State Building. Just for the heck of it…a sanctioned event. Crazy, but cool, right? This morning’s New York Times newspaper has a cute article about stair climbing as exercise, with a cute picture taken at the finish line – the top of the Empire State Building.

Force of Nature

February 7, 2009

lairdMy hat is off to Laird Hamilton – I got a lot out of his book FORCE OF NATURE, where he shares his wellness philosophy and secrets. It’s original. It’s honest. It’s gutsy.

One of the biggest perks to writing for the media is getting free fitness/wellness books from PR people, and I read ‘em all. Most of them are filled with recycled shallow stuff that make me wonder where our creativity has gone….This one (which someone gave to Steve for xmas, but lucky me!) discusses barefoot energy, how finding inspiration is a prerequisite to finding wellness, and diet suggestions like hemp milk and espresso. It also showcases a workout that is not gym/equipment based, but instead a kind-of-surfer workout, using the ocean and a paddle. The typical reader of this book is probably male – and a subscriber to Men’s Health magazine – but women can get a lot out of it as well as the info is universal – wellness is body+mind+spirit and tending to all three is necessary. Check it out if you get the chance….or if you are looking for a Valentine’s gift for your boyfriend, buy it for him, “wink, wink” :)

The Desire to Move is Innate (I think)

6 week old Luca doing a full hip lift on the changing table...

I’ve always had a hard time being idle. I think I was a labeled a  ”difficult” child because I was either roller skating on my mother’s new hardwood floors or I was pogo-sticking down a street full of traffic! One time, because it was winter, I  jumped rope in the garage and broke the ceiling’s garage door opener. As an adult, I see that my need to move was/is NOT a flaw (but it took me 30years). Seeing my baby Luca joyfully flail his arms and legs  - even doing what looks like advanced Pilates moves – I realize that the desire to move is innate and it sometimes gets “snuffed” out of a lot of us, due to society/work demands/mental fatigue/ being un-inspired.

So my postpartum lower back has healed and I’m getting adequate sleep again (Luca is a “5 hours straight” sleeper at night!) – ah, to be pain-free and energized – I’ll never take it for granted again. Planning on feeding my desire to move, with no guilt. :) EB
