We’ve Come a Long Way, Baby!

July 30, 2008

Watching the evolution of the fitness industry over the years has been entertaining. It has gone from party-like aerobics (80’s), to Olympic-like Step and Spin (90’s), to Eastern-ish yoga and Pilates (2000’s). BUT now i think we are on the verge of a mega-breakthrough. Signs of a “new and more intelligent” fitness approach – on a massive scale – are starting to show up everywhere I look.

Yesterday, I was the fitness tech on a photo shoot for Natural Health magazine. (The five page feature, written by Sarah Bowen Shea – includes a workout designed by me – will appear in their November 2008 issue.) I don’t know if you can tell by the photo, but everything from the lighting and the set to the clothing (100% cotton!) and the mood, was serene. I felt like I stepped into the future. Simple, happy, soft – the workout we photographed is about maintaining “good energy” around the holidays and showcases cardio, stretch and strength.

We’ve come a long way, baby! A big shift is occurring and I’m so glad to be around to witness it. Fitness is going from intensity-centric workouts to energy-centric ones. It’s no longer about heart rate, calorie burn, body mass index. All that stuff has it’s place in the research lab, but exercise (and not just yoga) is turning into an opportunity to unite the mind, body and spirit and sooth the psyche.

Over the next few weeks, have your own little experiment…enter your workouts with “good energy” in mind and then (if you want, no pressure!) let me know how it goes. Do you workout longer? Is the workout more enjoyable?

Saturday Morning Hike

July 26, 2008

I explored a new place to hike this morning located in Woodbridge Connecticut and it was amazing. First of all, there was nobody there – we had the whole place to ourselves. Second, it’s far away from roads and traffic, so my dogs, Sophie & Roxy, could be off leash (no leash laws either). Third, clean water! Sophie could swim and not be stinky. I feel like a stumbled upon a well kept secret. Just when you think you know about all of the outdoor possibilities, another one pops up, keeping things interesting.

Sophie (left) and Frieda loooovvveeee the water. My little Roxy stayed on shore.:)

I met my friend, Jessica, and her dog, Frieda, early in the a.m. and we hiked and talked while the dogs romped in the wilderness. It’s great exercise, but I realized that physical fitness isn’t my main motivator for hiking – isn’t nature invigorating to the spirit? The fresh air feels so good and watching the dogs experience their version of nirvana fills me with joy. Wellness is a verb. We have to do it. But, on top of that, true wellness affects the spirit. That’s why, I think, fitness can not be torture. If it’s torture, it’s not good for your spirit, and thus, not good at all. Something to think about…

Sirius Martha Stewart Radio

July 24, 2008

Good thing I was going on the radio and not TV – got caught in a downpour this morning in NYC in route to the Sirius studios on 6th Ave. I love love love radio – it’s very instant and intimate. This morning I was a guest on “Whole Living” with Emily Hoffman to discuss How to Increase Your Exercise Odds. Here are the top seven tips:

1. Get a exercise buddy to hold you accountable.
2. Pick an activity that “floats your boat.”
3. Exercise at the right time of day for you.
4. Pack your gym bag and organize your gear way ahead of time.
5.  Loss the “All or Nothing” attitude. A 20minute power walk is better than no power walk.
6. Splurge on cute workout wear – we all feel good when we dress well and it may nudge you out the door.
7.  Stay hydrated – it’ll give you energy!

Here I am with Whole Living Host Emily Hoffman in the Martha booth this morning.

I’m Learning as I Go…

July 17, 2008

I’ve decided to enter the blogging world. Wish me luck! My intention is the same as always, “to inspire.” I really do believe that in order to be truly fabulous, there is only one pre-requisite – to love yourself. (As corny as it sounds!)

My blog is going to be about fitness (of course) but it will also be about how to stay well during the other 23hours in your day. Everything matters.

Bye for now, Buff Girls. I must go and figure out how this technology works! xoEB
